Librarian Was a Victim in Charleston Shooting

By Dianna Dilworth

Cynthia Hurd, a librarian, was among the victims killed in Wednesday night’s attack on Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston County Public Library said that it was “devastated by the senseless shootings” and called Hurd “a tireless servant of the community who spent her life helping residents, making sure they had every opportunity for an education and personal growth.” Hurd worked for the Charleston County Public Library for 31 years, serving as the branch manager of the John L. Dart Branch from 1990-2011 and the manager of the St. Andrews Regional Library from 2011-2015.

The St. Andrews Regional Library and John L. Dart Library have closed today to honor the victims.
