Let Them Eat Cake

By Megan

Gawker’s founding editor (and former editor-in-chief of mediabistro.com) Elizabeth Spiers threw a party for Sloane Crosley last night at Helmut Lang to congratulate her on the success of her book, I Was Told There Would Be Cake. You know you’re in the Meat Packing district when the help is even better looking than the guests – but what’s a book party doing in a fashion store? It made sense for Carson Kressley, but if we’re going with book themes, shouldn’t we have been lounging at Magnolia, eating cupcakes? Although, to be fair, there were individual (one per person!) cakes available at a truck outside.

Half the people there didn’t know who Sloane was or that the party was for something so low-couture as a book. That would probably be the half of the crowd that was fashion industry designers for Rag & Bone and Helmut Lang, along with some of the socialites (Really, socialites? Yes. Socialites. According to this photo site, at least, which names Julia Allison and crew as such. And here I thought she was just Gawker Fodder).

Anyways, I made the mistake of not eating before the event. Surely there would be more than booze and cake, but mixed nuts, chocolate covered matzoh, and biscotti do not a meal make, especially when you’re gulping down the 10 Cane Rum mojitos. I was sadly disappointed that the bottles of rum scattered around the room disappeared before I could grab one to take home with me. I think the hot bartenders got to take the remainders home.
