Lessons Learned on Kickstarter

By Jason Boog

After one month of online fundraising on Kickstarter, Mediabistro Startups editor Devon Glenn has reached her goal and funded her Black Wave Project through the online site.

Glenn launched her project last month, giving us a primer on How To Use Kickstarter to Fund Your Publishing Project. Today on the Morning Media Menu, she offered writers advice about completing a Kickstarter fundraising drive and shared what she learned from the experiment. Press play below to listen.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview: “I would have immediately put up excerpts from the book and contacted more people directly and just put it out there more. I’d also put more announcements about it out there. For example, with Facebook, not all of your status updates make into someone’s feed. Sometimes people don’t respond because they didn’t see it the first time. You really have to be persistent–not five times a day, but every other day, just put it up there–you have to get things going. I would have emailed more blogs sooner so they had more time to catch on and read it.”
