Landing a Literary Book Deal the Good Old Fashioned Way

MarcyDermansky.jpgIn this topsy-turvy world of million dollar advances for debut books, it’s reassuring to read about a literary author who launched a career the good old fashioned way.

Today’s guest on the Morning Media Menu was Marcy Dermansky, talking about her novel, Bad Marie. Her dark and suspenseful book focuses on woman who is “tall, voluptuous, beautiful, thirty years old, and fresh from six years in prison for being an accessory to murder and armed robbery.” We discussed French movies, writing, and motherhood.

Dermansky explained how she landed her book deal for Twins. “In a way, I got lucky, but it wasn’t really luck. I published short stories first–which I think is really good advice for a writer. I had one short story published in the Indiana Review. With that story, I had four agents contact me and ask if I had representation. And I didn’t. I also didn’t have a book to sell at that time. But there was one agent [Alex Glass of Trident Media Group] that I really liked. I got a good feeling from his emails. Two years later when I did have a book I wrote him and said, ‘Hey Alex, I’m back. And I have a book. That’s how my first book happened.”
