Jonathan Franzen’s Glasses Recovered; Prankster Arrested; No Charges Filed

By Jason Boog

Yesterday we shared accounts that someone had stolen Jonathan Franzen’s glasses at a UK book party and left behind a ransom note. The prank ended in an arrest last night, but Franzen (pictured, via Greg Martin) won’t press charges.

The Guardian has the scoop: “the publisher’s communications manager Susanna Frayn said this morning: ‘Our deputy international sales director Damon Greeney was an absolute hero, and between him and the police they managed to find the glasses,’ she said. One man was arrested, but Franzen is not pressing charges, Frayn added, dismissing the event as ‘a harmless prank.'”

After a flurry of posts at Twitter hashtag “Glassesgate,” UK GQ had the first eyewitness account. Edward Champion even discovered who designed the author’s glasses.
