Google has created a Doodle to celebrate the renowned Native American writer, James Welch. This year would’ve been his 76th birthday.

Here’s more from the Google Doodle website: “Thirty years ago, Welch published his best known work, Fools Crow, the story of the Blackfeet people during the period of post-civil war encroachment by Europeans. In this award-winning novel, the Blackfeet seek to continue traditional ways, and to avoid both contact and conflict. As a whole, Welch’s works emphasized the humanity of native peoples and their deep attachment to their homelands.”

In the past, Google has crafted Doodles in honor of journalist Jane Jacobs, fairy tale writer Charles Perrault, and War & Peace novelist Leo Tolstoy. Here’s a video from Google headquarters spotlighting the artists behind the doodles. Which authors would you suggest as future Doodle subjects?
