As big publishing houses dramatically downsize, the iPhone is still gaining users–and at least a half million of them like to read books.

Digital readers are already crossing platforms between stand-alone readers and mobile phones. Yesterday, GalleyCat reported that Stanza, the leading iPhone e-reader application with 575,000 users, inked a deal with Fictionwise to bring 40,000 new books to the online catalog for the iPhone. Today TeleRead, explained how you can share previously purchased e-books from your Fictionwise account with your Stanza reader.

Journerdism spotted this article about the growing iPhone market: “Apple’s iPhone 3G is being credited this week as the lone force responsible for growth of the smartphone market during the September quarter. In a report issued Tuesday, Needham & Co. noted that worldwide smartphone shipments increased 28.6% during the three-month period ending September.”
