How To Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

By Jason Boog

Hurricane Sandy smashed through the East Coast last night, leaving many in need. If you want to help victims of this terrible storm, you can donate money to Red Cross disaster relief right now.

You can also make an appointment to donate blood to the Red Cross. The organization explained in a report: “Nearly 100 Red Cross blood drives have already been cancelled due to the storm, and there could be more as the week goes on. This means a loss of as many as 3,200 blood and platelet products. If anyone is eligible, especially in places not affected by the storm, they are asked to please schedule a blood donation now.”

Over 3,200 people stayed in Red Cross shelters in nine states as Hurricane Sandy swept through the country. The group has sent 1,300 workers to the region along with 230,000 ready-to-eat meals.

The Red Cross also needs volunteers to work at hurricane shelters: “seeking individuals over 16 years of age that can carry 50 lbs to volunteer at local New York Red Cross Shelters.”

In addition, the New York City Public Advocate’s Office is looking for volunteers to help with clean-up efforts.

If you know about other ways to help victims of the storm, email GalleyCat the details to we will include them.

Before the storm, we collected some resources for readers in the East Coast region.
