How To Break into Comic Book Writing

By Jason Boog

robert23.gifOn mediabistro.com’s Morning Media Menu today, Robert Venditti explained how he became a sucessful graphic novelist–writing “Surrogates,” the indie graphic novel that was adapted into an upcoming movie starring Bruce Willis.

“Just getting into the arts in general, whether you want to be a musician, or an artist, it isn’t a job you can just go out and apply for, he explained. “My way of doing it was to volunteer at the mailroom of Top Shelf, a comics publisher here in Atlanta. Just as a way to learn about the industry and be around like-minded people.”

Venditti shared his remarkable story–climbing from the mailroom of an independent comics company to watching his graphic novel become a major motion picture. We also discussed the adaptation process for the upcoming movie and the art of crafting a graphic novel.
