As Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series rules the bestseller list, a generation of young readers are quietly boosting their vocabulary.
Author Brian Leaf has just finished “Defining Twilight,” a vocabulary reference guide that helps readers apply Meyer’s writing to the tough tests on the SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT. Readers keep the workbook beside the novel, learning new words, studying synonyms, and taking quizzes about the new vocabulary words.
Here’s a sample paragraph unloading a stream of 25-cent words that young readers can learn: “Can you resist the allure of Edward’s myriad charms–his ochre eyes and tousled hair, the cadence of his speech, his chiseled alabaster skin, and his gratuitous charm? Will you hunt surreptitiously and tolerate the ceaseless deluge in Forks to evade the sun and uphold the facade?”
