William Conrad Gibbons (GalleyCat)Historian William Conrad Gibbons has died. He was 88 years old.

Gibbons (pictured, via) became well-known for a book series called The U.S. Government and the Vietnam War. These books offer a detailed report on the relationship between Congress and the executive branch on time period from 1945 to 1975. Prior to his passing, Gibbons had almost finished writing the fifth and final volume.

Here’s more from The New York Times: “In the late 1970s, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, seeking to map the road that had led to the morass of the Vietnam War, directed the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress to prepare a dispassionate, purely factual account of the period from 1945 to 1975…The task fell to Dr. Gibbons, a historian by training who in 1972 had begun working as a senior analyst for the foreign affairs division at the library…In keeping with its mandate, the work was descriptive and analytical.”
