According to the NY Post, the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts called the arrest “regrettable and unfortunate” in a public statement. The 58-year-old professor had been locked out of his own house, and a neighbor called the police when they spotted him trying to gain entry. Gates is the author of many books, including the memoir, “Colored People.”

Earlier today, Gates had an interview with the Washington Post, explaining: “This is outrageous and that this is how poor black men across the country are treated everyday in the criminal justice system. It’s one thing to write about it, but altogether another to experience it.”
