Swedish author Henning Mankell, the creative force behind the Wallander series of detective novels that have been adapted into TV shows in Swedish and English, has died. He was 67 years old.

Almost two years ago, the crime writer revealed that he had cancer in a piece in Sweden’s Göteborgs-Posten newspaper. He wrote about his experiences with the disease in his regular column.

Mankell did an interview with Goteborgs-Posten several weeks ago in which he commented on how cancer patients must conserve their energy due to an infinite fatigue that comes as a side effect of illness. In the interview he said that he was working about two hours a day.
