Help Save St. Mark’s Bookshop

By Jason Boog

The great St. Mark’s Bookshop in New York City has struggled to pay rent to Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science. The indie bookstore needs the support of readers and writers for a new petition.

The bookshop hopes to collect at least 2,000 signatures for a petition asking for “a significant rent concession” from their landlord.

Here’s the text of the petition:  “The St. Mark’s Bookshop, a vital Lower East Side cultural institution, needs a rent low enough to survive. Join the Cooper Square Committee petitioning Cooper Union, the bookstore’s landlord, to give St Marks Bookshop a lower rent.” (Via Sarah Weinman)

Don Linn adds an important point: “You want to save St Mark’s Bookstore, go over there and buys some books from time to time.”
