Happy Birthday Jack Kerouac

By Dianna Dilworth

If author Jack Kerouac were alive today, he would be celebrating his 90th birthday. The author, who died in 1969 at the age of 47, was known for his stream-of-consciousness style of writing, which were often accounts of his travels across America.

In honor of the Beat generation pioneer, Flavorwire has put together a list of life advice from his various works. For example: “No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength. Learning for instance, to eat when he’s hungry and sleep when he’s sleepy.”

The author’s work has is alive and well today and has even entered the modern eBook era. Last year, Penguin Digital released Kerouac’s classic novel On the Road as a digital book app with a number of interactive features including interactive maps that track his travels with quotes from the book highlighted for the different cities and towns he visited.
