Five Ponds Press will revise Our Virginia: Past and Present by Joy Masoff, removing a controversial section claiming thousands of African Americans fought for the Confederate army during the Civil War. Most historians agree that is incorrect.
The Associated Press reports that the new edition will be available starting next year. At the moment, schools will have to use the original version. The history text was distributed to fourth-grade students, and they will block out the controversial content with white stickers.
Despite the dissent, Masoff stood by what she wrote. She explained, “I am a fairly respected writer” and admitted that the portion in question came primarily through Internet research. (Via Publishers Lunch)
