Five Chapters Website to Publish Print Books

By Jason Boog

5chapters.jpgOne of the literary world’s new sources for short stories online is branching out into print publishing. Today’s guest on the Morning Media Menu was David Daley, founder of the short story website, Five Chapters.

Daley shared some big news–his short story website will soon be publishing print books. The first three short story collections will be: Other People We Married by Emma Straub, Nobody Ever Gets Lost by Jess Row and Only Connect, a fivechapters anthology. Publication has been set for January 26, 2011.

Daley explained: “The business model has changed–this is the time when people can create new business models. A literary book these days sells a lot of copies if it sells 2,500, 3,000 or 4,000 copies–that’s a big amount. The numbers are relatively low, in terms of actual sales … I think you can reach those people more efficiently if you already have them coming to your website every week.”

He concluded: “[I eliminate] the massive fixed structural costs that big publishing has–whether it’s the office space in Union Square or an army of marketers people and publicists. What I’m saying is I think I can get you the exact same number and do all of that work and do just as well for you as one person.”
