Facebook Timeline Novel Featured on Kickstarter

By Maryann Yin

Writer Kyle Rutkin hopes to raise $4,000 on Kickstarter to finance the production of his Facebook Timeline novel, A Life Told From the Cloud. The book stars a 34-year-old writer named CJ Williams; upon learning that he has cancer, he uses his Facebook timeline to pen his memoir. Above, we’ve embedded a video about the project–what do you think?

Here’s more about the project: “In the novel, Williams uses six profiles from the people in his past: his best friend, high school sweetheart, college girlfriend, ‘the one who got away,’ his runaway mother and his most recent breakup. Using the data stored on Facebook, Williams describes the impact these relationships have had on his life and his final days leading up to his surgery.”

Rutkin plans to tell this story relying entirely on wall posts, profiles and pictures. The funds will be used to hire an editor, bring in a book designer, cover printing costs and ship out promotional copies of the book. In addition, Rutkin will be digitally publishing his novel for the Kindle under his publishing banner, Palooza Press. Should there be any funds leftover, he hopes to publish another author under the banner as well.
