Contemporary ‘Frankenstein’ Film in the Works

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will be adapted into a contemporary setting for the big screen.

According to Deadline, Craig Fernandez conceived the idea and wrote the script. Matt Tolmach will produce the film through his company, Matt Tolmach Productions.

A 1994 adaptation of Frankenstein starred Robert DeNiro as The Creature and Kenneth Branagh as his creator. If you were the casting director, who would you pick for those two roles? This GalleyCat contributor suggests Ralph Fiennes (who played an excellent Voldemort in Harry Potter) as The Creature and Alan Rickman (Harry Potter potions master) as Victor Frankenstein.

Shelley’s writing continues to make an impact on the literary world today. The New York Public Library recently made an animated adaptation of her short story called Mounseer Nongtongpaw, or the Discoveries of John Bull in a Trip to Paris. The video was put together in promotion of a new exhibit called “Shelley’s Ghost” at Oxford University’s Bodleian Library which features the handwritten first draft of Frankenstein.
