Cathy Guisewite Retiring Cathy Comic Strip

By Maryann Yin

medium23.jpgThe world will soon have to learn to live without its daily dose of Cathy. Comic artist Cathy Guisewite will end the strip on October 3, 2010. She told the Chicago Tribune one of the reasons was “a creative biological clock, which is urging me to try something else while I can.”

The popular comic strip explored her life, coping with the “four basic guilt groups.” They are: work, love, mother and food. Guisewite has published more than 20 collection books of the comic strip such as What do you mean, I still don’t have equal rights??! (1980), Wake me up when I’m a size 5 (1985), and I Am Woman, Hear Me Snore (1998). She also published the memorable 2005 publication, The Wedding of Cathy and Irving : A Cathy Collection (pictured).

There is still one more task: writing the last strip. Guisewite is remaining silent on how she will end the 34-year series. She explained: “If I had the sort of brain capable of planning two weeks ahead I never would have been able to create this strip for the last 34 years.”

Editor’s note: On Twitter, the hashtag #WaysCathyShouldEnd is growing rapidly with imaginative endings for the series.
