Borders To Meet with Publishers; B&N Stresses ‘Playing Field Should Be Even’

Borders.GIFBorders Group’s general counsel and chief information officer both resigned yesterday, touching off a flurry of speculation about the future of the troubled bookseller.

The New York Times noted that the bookseller would meet with publishers this week to discuss delayed payments. The paper painted a gloomy picture of a potential Borders bankruptcy:  “If the bookseller were to go out of business, publishers could lose tens of millions of dollars, miles of shelf space and the selling power of more than 675 retail stores.”

At the same time, Barnes & Noble shared this statement with Publishers Weekly: “We think the playing field should be even … We expect publishers to offer same terms to all other booksellers, including Barnes & Noble and independent booksellers.”
