Beyoncé Incorporates Warsan Shire’s Poetry in ‘Lemonade’

Beyoncé thrilled the world with the recent release of her new visual album, Lemonade. Warsan Shire, a Somali-British poet, worked with the superstar singer on this project.

The Washington Post reports that Beyoncé quoted a great number of Shire’s poems and incorporated words that Shire wrote specifically for the Lemonade music videos. The video embedded above features a trailer for the Lemonade HBO program.

Here’s more from Vogue: “For Lemonade, Beyoncé and Shire adapted lines from several of Shire’s poems, including ‘The Unbearable Weight of Staying,’ ‘Dear Moon,’ ‘How to Wear Your Mother’s Lipstick,’and ‘Nail Technician as Palm Reader.’ The first three can be heard in their entirety on a digital album Shire recorded in 2012, and the entire script of Lemonade is available here.” (via Vox)
