Barack Obama Writes a Feminist Essay

By Maryann Yin

President Barack ObamaBarack Obama has written an essay for Glamour Magazine called “This Is What a Feminist Looks Like.” Throughout his lifetime, the 44th President of the United States has written an opinion paper for the Journal of the American Medical Association, a picture book, and two autobiographies.

In Obama’s feminist-theme essay, he mentions the women who have influenced his life such as First Lady Michelle Obama, his two daughters, his grandmother, and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. The Commander-in-Chief acknowledges that the fight for gender equality has come a long way, but he also makes it clear that the fight is not over. Towards the end of the essay, he stresses that society must continue pushing for change. Here’s an excerpt from the piece:

“We need to keep changing the attitude that raises our girls to be demure and our boys to be assertive, that criticizes our daughters for speaking out and our sons for shedding a tear. We need to keep changing the attitude that punishes women for their sexuality and rewards men for theirs…It is absolutely men’s responsibility to fight sexism too. And as spouses and partners and boyfriends, we need to work hard and be deliberate about creating truly equal relationships.”
