At this point, it’s tempting to write off the auction proceedings for IF I DID IT as a wolf-crying measure – there’s always going to be something that thwarts this circus from taking full flight. The newest twist, reported over the weekend by the Associated Press and Newsweek, is that Lorraine Brooke Associates – the shell company created by O.J. Simpson family and associates to broker the book deal – declared bankruptcy, delaying the court-ordered auction in Sacramento scheduled for Tuesday–at least until a federal bankruptcy judge can hold a hearing on the case. “Everything is frozen now,” said David J. Cook, a lawyer for the Goldman family. “They filed bankruptcy to stop the auction. It’s now frozen O.J.”

While the lawyers duke it out and the Goldman and Brown families debate the ethics of Fred Goldman auctioning off the rights of a book he formerly lobbied to keep unpublished, we have to ask – Cook had to be making an unintentional pun, right? That’s just too easy a joke to leave alone…
