Art Spiegelman to Judge Strand Bookstore Tote Bag Design Contest

By Jason Boog

.jpegGenerations of readers (including this GalleyCat editor) have spent hours browsing the crowded shelves of Strand Bookstore in New York City. Now a lucky designer can put their personal stamp on the bookstore.

From March 1 until March 31, designers from around the world can submit a design for the iconic Strand Bookstore tote bag, vying for a number of prizes. The grand prize winner will have their design featured on a tote. The contest will be judged by New Yorker art editor Francoise Mouly, cartoonist Art Spiegelman, School of Visual Arts faculty member Steven Heller, Masterpiece Comics creator R. Sikoryak, and graphic novelist Adrian Tomine.

The entire press release is embedded after the jump. Here’s more about the contest: “the Strand Book Store wants to give emerging artists the opportunity to have their artwork featured on a Strand tote bag. Design Requirements: The illustration must feature either a representation of the Strand Book Store or books. The illustration must include the artist’s signature, ‘Strand Book Store NYC’ and ‘strandbooks.com’ or a representation of the Strand logo (as seen on strandbooks.com).”
