With hundreds of thousands of books sold, it’s hard to believe Latina writing sensation, Alisa Valdes Rodriguez was once so broke that she had her check card denied while trying to buy baby formula for her then infant son. Rodriguez has come a long way since her first novel Dirty Girls Social Club broke records for Latino-themed novels. Now, 5 novels later, Rodriguez is releasing a new novel due in July called, The Husband Habit.

The always spunky, sometimes controversial, but oh-so-talented Rodriguez has made headway for women writers of all colors to follow. When asked where she’d like to see herself in 5-10 years, she answers that she’d really to see more films and television shows featuring people of all colors made.

But as Rodriguez points out, “90 percent of all movies that get funded are written by men. I’d like to see this fact change, but it will probably be easier for me to concentrate very hard on growing myself a penis instead.”
