Algonquin Books to Publish John Waters Commencement Speech

By Dianna Dilworth

Algonquin Books, a Division of Workman Publishing, will publish cult filmmaker John Waters’ commencement address to the Rhode Island School of Design’s graduating class of 2015.

The publisher has acquired the North American rights to the work called, Make Trouble, from the author. Senior Editor Amy Gash acquired the book from Waters’ agent Bill Clegg of The Clegg Agency. In the speech, Waters encourages young people to embrace their adult disobedience and work hard to read, spy and watch movies with bad reviews (to figure out what the directors did wrong). You can watch a video of the speech here.

“Since I got in serious trouble in every school I ever went to, the chance to give college graduates career advice seems the perfect ironic end (or beginning?) to my damaged academic career,” stated Waters. “I hope this little book will become the perfect graduation gift from parents to their troubled children who have been driving them crazy for years.”
