This season’s fiction issue of the New Yorker offers a visual gag from Adrian Tomine, in which a young woman looks abashed as the owner of the independent bookstore next to her apartment watches her accepting a delivery from (But maybe he’s rushing to judgment! Maybe she’s ordering DVDs, or a new digital camera! He doesn’t know!) It’s also worth noting that this is the first time that Tomine—who has to date only gotten cover assignments from the magazine for the fiction issues—hasn’t drawn somebody in the act of reading a book:
