A Celebration of Jewish Alternative Comics

By Neal

Back in March, when Harry Brod landed a book deal for Superman Is Jewish?: How Comic Book Superheroes Came to Serve Truth, Justice and the Jewish-American Way, GalleyCat noted that this was a recurring trend in recent books about comic book history, like mediabistro.com instructor Danny Fingeroth‘s Disguised as Clark Kent: Jews, Comics, and the Creation of the Superhero. Now we can add Paul Buhle‘s Jews and American Comics: An Illustrated History of an American Art Form to the list—and veer away from the superhero stuff into the alternative/underground world of Art Spiegelman, and Ben Katchor, and (as seen below)Kim Deitch.

Deitch is one of several artists who will be joining Buhle and The New Press tonight at KGB Bar for a party celebrating the book’s publication.
