More than 450 writers have joined together to write an open letter addressed to the American people. The group posted this piece on the Literary Hub website to make it known that they oppose the presumptive presidential nominee of the Republican party, Donald Trump.
Some of the participants include MacArthur Fellow Junot Díaz, Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Egan, A Series of Unfortunate Events series author Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket), horror writer Stephen King, and The Joy Luck Club novelist Amy Tan. Here’s an excerpt from the letter:
“Because, as writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power…Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response; for all these reasons, we, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.”
In addition to composing this message, the group also started a petition on the iPetitions website to gather more supporters. Since its launch, more than 6,000 signatures have been collected. (via The New York Times)
