At New York Comic Con, a group of comics creators shared advice during the “Creating Graphic Novels for Kids” panel.
The panelists included Andrew Arnold, Alexis Frederick-Frost, Dave Roman, James L. Barry, Jimmy Gownley, Paul Pope, and Chris Duffy.
Below, we’ve rounded up three handy tips from the discussion…
(1) Lock down the character design before drafting. This helps to maintain aesthetic consistency throughout the entire book.
(2) Kids love using their imagination so don’t be afraid to be creative (even crazy) and play with reading format to try different storytelling techniques.
(3) Don’t ever “dumb down” a project just because you intend for it to be read by young readers.
