Viola Davis: ‘We Have to Step Up to the Plate Too’

On today’s edition of Sway in the Morning, a weekday program with Sway Calloway on Eminem’s SiriusXM channel , actress Viola Davis started off by making it clear that she really is going to be away from Los Angeles this weekend. She’s not boycotting the Oscars, and won’t secretly be within shouting distance of the Dolby Theatre.

She then had a pretty interesting message for her African-American fans, in the shadow of #OscarsSoWhite and the need for Hollywood to green-light more racially diverse movie projects:

“Listen, we have to step up to the plate too. We have to see movies like Selma. We have to see movies like Dope. We have to see movies like Beasts of No Nation.”

“We have a tendency to see just very specific movies. And we do the same thing in TV. We only watch very specific shows, that we feel really show us as black people… You’ve got to support those different voices out there, like the Ryan Coogler’s, like the Ava DuVernay’s…”

Davis also chatted about her upcoming role in Suicide Squad. Very comically, in the middle of her comments, a champagne bottle spontaneously popped, leading Davis to joke: “What that meant was, ‘Viola, you’re giving too much away…'”

Davis has been nominated twice for the Oscar, in 2008 (Doubt-Best Supporting Actress) and 2011 (The Help-Best Actress). She has also received four Golden Globe nominations and recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her great work in ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder.
