<i>Times</i> Cafeteria Gets The All Clear

It looks like the cafeteria in The New York Times' building is up and running again today after a wave of "gastrointestinal symptoms" sidelined a number of company employees. In a memo to staff today announcing the cafeteria's reopening, the company said it's still not sure "whether the illness was bacterial or viral," although NYC Department of Health tests should be able to shed more light on the matter in a few days. We think all the Times Co. employees in the midtwon HQ should probably proceed with caution, at least until all the test results are in. Full memo after the jump Previously: New York Times Hits Upon New Plan To Shed Employees Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to tell you that there have been no new reported cases of gastrointestinal illness among our colleagues since last week. Over the past several days we have had numerous conversations with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and with Restaurant Associates and its outside health consultant. Tests to date have turned up no evidence of food contamination. Based on those test results and the significant and rigorous cleaning, food disposal and sanitization process we conducted, coupled with the counsel of the Department of Health and advisers, we have decided to reopen all areas of the cafeteria as of lunch service on Wednesday. While we cannot yet say with certainty whether the illness was bacterial or viral, we expect to have further test results from the NYC Department of Health in the coming days. In the meantime, we continue to ask that employees wash their hands frequently and utilize hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers have been placed in the lobby, cafeteria and coffee bar.
