Time For A New Contract At The Merc

The San Jose Mercury News is now negotiating for a new contract, the California Media Workers Guild reports. Talks opened yesterday and are focused, the guild said, on protecting the staff.

The paper, which is owned by MediaNews, argues that more newsroom consolidation in the Bay Area is needed to keep the paper solvent.

Another MediaNews owned paper, the Monterey County Herald, ratified a new contract in late September which called for a pay freeze, a lapse in a retirement benefit, and a possible furlough, so the Merc may be looking at similar concessions.
