The Merc's Guild Meets

The copy desk at the San Jose Mercury News is struggling to produce the same quality of work with fewer staff, according to news from the Bay Area News Guild. The changes in schedule and reductions in staff are causing “frustration — if not chaos,” the guild reports it told Merc management.

Other issues the newspaper workers are facing: long-term interns. Some have been on “staff” as interns for over a year. Why’s that a problem? “Our goal is to ensure these opportunities are valuable learning experiences, but not a means to create an alternate workforce that isn’t covered by the same pay and other protections provided to our unit members.”
