The Economy Was The Top News Story of 2011

According to the latest “Year in News” study by The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ), the economy was the most-covered news story of 2011. The story made up 20 percent of news time across all platforms, and easily beat out the runner-up — Middle East unrest — which made up 12 percent of all news stories.

The next biggest story was the 2012 election, at nine percent, followed by several major events — the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Osama bin Laden’s death, the attack on Gabrielle Giffords — making up about two to three percent of all the news in 2011.
