The 'Delicate Art' Of Layoffs

The most destructive part of layoffs may affect not the laid off employee, but those who are left behind, according to a new study. “Whereas a newly jobless person’s mental health may ‘bottom out’ after about six months, and then even begin to improve, the mental state of people who are perpetually worried about losing their job just continues to deteriorate, getting worse and worse,” according to Cambridge sociologist Brendan Burchell.

Though this Workforce blog post is geared more towards the managers who have to physically hand over the pink slip or give the face-to-face talk, the information here can be useful for anyone who’s had to deal with staff reductions.
