The Al Capone of Supermarkets

There’s a great piece in the current issue of Pasadena Weekly about the trial of grocery store owner- and alleged gangster- George Torres. Torres, who owns the popular Los Angeles grocery store chain Numero Uno, is being charged with tax evasion, bribery, harboring illegal immigrants and conspiracy to commit murder. It’s a piece that was scheduled to run in this week’s issue of CityBeat, but- well, there’s no CityBeat anymore. Investigative reporter Jeffrey Anderson’s coverage of Torres has been the most comprehensive in the media, and that his story almost died with CityBeat is a reminder of just what is lost when a paper goes under.
