<i>The Advocate</i>'s Editor-in-Chief Named Editorial Director

Here Media, which publishes The Advocate and Out today announced that it was promoting Jon Barrett, editor-in-chief of The Advocate and Advocate.com, to editorial director of the newly created Advocate Group, which will now oversee all of the magazine's print, online and TV content as well other Here Media brands such as SheWired.com and PlanetOut.com. The announcement comes just a few weeks after Here CEO Paul Colichman announced plans to bundle The Advocate's print magazine with Out for subscribers. In his new position, Barrett will be in charge of growing the Advocate brand, an undertaking that includes oversight of an upcoming hour-long television magazine series aimed at the brand's LGBT audience. Before joining The Advocate, Barrett worked as features editor for O magazine spin-off O at Home and served as senior editor at Cargo and Real Simple. Additionally, Barrett will guide the editorial direction of PlanetOut.com, which provides entertainment, travel, and lifestyle news, as well as SheWired.com, a leading women's website providing exclusive, informative content on everything from pop culture and politics to travel, health, and lifestyle. With more than 15 years' experience as a journalist and in publishing, Barrett most recently served as Editor in Chief for The Advocate and Advocate.com. Prior to that, he was the Features Director for O at Home, an Oprah Magazine published by Hearst. He also has worked as the Senior Editor for Cargo, from the Conde Nast group, and as a Senior Editor for Real Simple, a Time Inc. publication. Barrett served as The Advocate's Senior News Editor from 1997 to 2003. Before first coming to The Advocate he was an Assistant Editor at the Windy City Times, Chicago's premier LGBT weekly newspaper. Barrett's writing credits also include three books: 2002's Hero of Flight 93: Mark Bingham, from Alyson Books, and working as a writing collaborator on Evan Wolfson's Why Marriage Matters, published by Simon & Schuster in 2004, and Judy Shepard's memoir The Meaning of Matthew, published by Hudson Street Press in September.
