Would You Pay $2 to Leave a Comment?

Jewish-focused online daily Tablet, which launched in 2009, institutes unorthodox new commenting system

Sam Biddle tweeted that he thinks this is a “brilliant” idea. Here at FishbowlNY, we’re not so sure.

Per an announcement today by Tablet magazine, folks are free to interact with the Jewish-focused online daily all they want via Facebook and Twitter. But if they are angling to leave a permanent comment footprint on the website, it’s going to cost anywhere from $2 a day to $180 for the year:

Instead of shutting off comments altogether (as some outlets are starting to do), we are going to try something else: Ask those of you who’d like to comment on the site to pay a nominal fee — less a paywall than a gesture of your own commitment to the cause of great conversation.
