A potential blowout, a power outage, and a nailbiter. That’s what WCBS viewers saw on Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVII, overall the third-highest rated broadcast in television history.
So, of course the game in which Baltimore edged San Francisco, was a clear victor of the week. Thanks to the blackout at the Superdome, the game was broken into three potions for ratings purposes. It was number one from resumption of play at 9:15 p.m. to it’s 10:45 p.m. conclusion with an estimated 6.7 million viewers and an off the charts 34.3 rating.
The first segment, from kickoff to 8:45 p.m., including the Beyonce´halftime show, pulled in 6.6 million fans and a 33.9 rating.
As for the delay, listed from 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., it was third with 6.6 million viewers and a 33.0. In a symmetric survey for WCBS, the post-game show took fourth place, although there was a huge dropoff, likely from the outage. It had 4.4 million viewers and a 22.5 rating.
American Idol settled for fifth place to make its first appearance of the week (1.2 million/6.1). The Fox singing competition also nailed down a tie for eighth (929,000/4.7).

WABC had its highest positioning at number 13 with Modern Family (764,000/3.9), while the best spot for WNBC was Chicago Fire at 16 (715,000/3.6).
The latest installment of PBS’ Downton Abbey on WNET landed at 22 (599,000/3.1).
