Successful Hyperlocal 'Is An Anomaly'

The path to a successful, profitable hyperlocal news site is not yet all that easy, reports NetNewsCheck. Sure, you’ve got your Baristanets here and there, but those are anomalies, the writers suggest.

Instead, most are labors of love, limping along on what one analyst, Gordon Borrell, called “the fumes of severance pay.”

He cites BlackwhiteRead.com, which covers suburban Dallas, and SDNN, both of which have been struggling lately.

There are a couple problems with hyperlocal startups. For one, most of them are run by former journalists, a group not known for their business savvy.
