He took over the reigns as VP and publisher at the American Express Publishing high-end periodical Departures in June. But last night, Steven DeLuca was feted by AMEX as the magazine’s savior.
When DeLuca joined Departures, the company was reeling, down 15 percent for the year. With a tip of his own cap, though, DeLuca tells FishbowlNY that the magazine is poised to finish the year with 2 percent gains in revenue.
“It’s really been across the board in all of our major categories,” DeLuca says.
Most recently, New York City native DeLuca was VP and publisher at Conde´ Nast’s Details before being ousted in October 2009.
He also was associate publisher at Conde´ Nast Traveler and at Maxim.
But unlike his work at those mainstream periodicals, DeLuca is now overseeing niche publishing.
Departures is only available to the 1 million AMEX Platinum and Centurion Card members.
“For me it’s a dream job. …Everything I’ve been doing for the last 10 years comes to the highest point with a magazine like Departures.”
He says it’s at the upper echelon of marketing and brands.
And building a strong marketing partnership going forward is a key to continued success.
“That unique access that we have to affluent consumers is going to allow us to really put that to work for our clients,” DeLuca says.
DeLuca also is working on new signature events and ramping up their digital platform.
“Having all of the assets of American Express—it’s really one of the most exciting jobs I’ve ever had.”
