SpongeBob is dead; Long live SpongeBob!

In other two-dimensional news, the Cartoon Network announced that it’s getting into the live-action programming business.

Nick Movies’ Ramsey Naito has been drawn to oversee its longform programming efforts, while “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” creator Craig McCraken will oversee its shorts division.

No word on why, or what specifically Cartoon will be looking for, but, the move isn’t so hard to figure out. As Variety‘s Denise Martin points out, Cartoon Network continues to trail Nickelodeon and Disney Channel in the 6-to-11 year old demo, and down 17% in primetime year to year.
