Reuters Reporter Who Contracted Zika Virus Recounts Scary, Surreal Summer

Symptoms appeared towards the end of Puerto Rico posting.

NickBrownReuters‘Better now, but it sure took its time.’ That’s how Nick Brown (pictured), the San Juan, Puerto Rico bureau chief for Reuters, replied to one well-wisher on Twitter today in the wake of his piece about contracting the Zika virus.

The symptoms first hit in June, lingered for two weeks, and then returned anew a week later. Brown writes that he initially thought some throat pain might be a reaction to a cigar he had smoked:

My mother was the first to suspect I was infected with the virus that arrived in Puerto Rico in December 2015, four months after I’d begun an assignment as Reuters’ San Juan bureau chief.
