Pulitzer-Winning Cartoonist's Layoff Reminds Us That They're A Dying Breed

With the news that Matt Davies, Pulitzer-winning cartoonist for the Westchester Journal-News is losing his job as of August 28, we came across the startling statistic that fewer than 80 papers across the country have an editorial cartoonist on staff.

In 2005, 104 cartoonists participated in Black Ink Monday, a nonviolent protest against job cuts by the Tribune Company. At that time, American Association of Editorial Cartoonists president Clay Bennett said that cartoonist staff jobs at papers had declined by half in the past 20 years.
