Portland Press-Herald Offers Buyouts, Hopes To Get 40 Volunteers

The Portland Press-Herald in Maine is hoping to reduce its workforce by 15%, or about 40 employees.

The paper is starting by asking for buyout volunteers, the Portland Newspaper Guild reports, but if there aren’t enough volunteers, the newspaper will cut jobs.

The company announced the program Tuesday. Volunteers have until Sept. 27 to express interest in the offer.

The guild wrote on its website announcing the news: “We have all been through this before, and we know we can count on Guild members to support each other during this time of financial upheaval.”
