Old people love them some Fox News. That’s according to The New York Times, which reports that the median age of Fox News viewers has been 65 or older for the past five years. And lest you think those people are just passed out in their La-Z-Boys, they’re not! Well, some of them definitely are. But these viewers are the main reason Fox News generates huge profits, even though younger consumers are tuning the network out.
The elderly yelling “Give me my Fox News!” and “Where the hell are the Entenmann’s!?” force cable systems to shell out 94 cents a month to carry the channel. And with about 100 million subscribers, an expert guessed that Fox News will rake in $1.11 billion this year, just from those fees.
The passion of the Fox News viewer has some questioning the adage that the younger the consumer, the better.
“For some clients, getting old is a concern,” Tracey Riener, the senior vice president of Havas Media, told the Times. “But for some clients looking for people close to retirement age or living in retirement, I would say the group 35 to 60 is still important.” Clients like La-Z-Boy.
