Just in Time for the Oscars: A Real-Life Moneyball Sequel

It’s so obvious, it almost hurts. Manny Ramirez takes dead aim at MLB redemption with a team front-and-center at this Sunday’s Oscars. Moneyball, meet “Mannyball.”

But so far, headline and sportswriters are exercising some admirable pun-restraint. On the occasion of Ramirez reporting today to Oakland Athletics spring training, only a handful of outlets at press time have gone full bore with the Mannyball moniker.

FishbowlLA’s favorite headline so far is from Spanish-language website liderendeportes.com. Columnist Félix Luzón launches into the topic under the words “Mannyball” en acción.

What’s so great about this latest A’s development is that Ramirez is a walking, talking embodiment of the Billy Beane ragtag spirit.
