NYT Op-Ed Tells Everyone to Relax About the Arizona Immigration Law

An Arizona law that cracks down on illegal immigration is no big deal, writes University of Missouri law professor (and former immigration law adviser to John Ashcroft) Kris Kobach, in an Op-Ed for today’s New York Times.

Kobach points out that the Arizona law merely inflicts a state-level penalty for lack of documentation, which is already illegal under Federal law. He also says that “reasonable suspicion” — the grounds granted to police to detain suspected illegal immigrants — is a well-defined legal concept, and so does not grant overly general power to the cops.
